By definition, theft is the taking of another person’s rightful property without that person’s freely-given consent. Note that consent is not freely given if threatened either physically or verbally. There are varying degrees of theft, and different classifications depending on what was stolen, its value and the intent.In the United States, theft is largely regulated at the state level, with accused parties prosecuted by in accordance of the laws of the state in which the act allegedly occurred. This is not an exclusive policy however, as the United States Federal Government has occasionally championed jurisdiction in instances where actions directly affect federal agencies or come into jurisdiction controversies as a result of interstate commerce laws.The general term “theft” can be extended to any of the following crimes (though not an exclusive list) punishable in varying degrees according to individual state laws:
- Burglary
- Criminal Conversion
- Embezzlement
- Fraud
- Grand Theft Auto
- Identity Theft
- Kidnapping
- Larceny
- Looting
- Robbery
- Shoplifting
