Altering the landscaping around a house to enhance home security is cost-effective and relatively simple. A few easy tips can protect a home from criminals without breaking the bank.

Cut back bushes and other plants near the home. Criminals often use vegetation as cover when they’re breaking into a door or window. Homeowners with friendly neighbors may want to consider removing plants so that neighbors can easily see the home. Neighbors can watch over the house while the homeowner is at work or on vacation.

Multiple-story homes should have trees planted at a distance from the structure. Trellises and other plant climbers should be short and unable to support a person’s weight. People often do not secure the second floor of their home as well as the ground floor. Criminals can climb up a tree or trellis and enter through an unlocked window or balcony door.

Consider installing thorny plants or vines around doors and windows. Cacti or roses are popular options that can keep criminals from easily reaching a potential entry point.

Landscaping is not a complete deterrent to all criminals. However, effective landscaping in combination with other tools can prevent criminals from having easy access to a home.
